Free Things to Do in Riga This Autumn and Winter (2026): Dates, a Walking Loop and a City Game
The best free things to do in Riga this autumn and winter are walking Old Riga and the Art Nouveau streets, browsing the Central Market, seeing the Staro Rīga light festival (15–18 November 2026), visiting the Old Town Christmas market on Doma laukums, and using the free museum Sunday on the last Sunday of each month. None of them needs a ticket. Below is a checked list with dates, a self-guided Old Town loop, and a way to turn the walk into a game that can earn you real rewards.
Riga is where most visitors to Latvia end up: in the second quarter of 2026, 72.1% of non-resident guests in Latvian hotels and other accommodation stayed in Riga (Central Statistical Bureau of Latvia, August 2026). Locals know the city empties a little after the summer, yet November and December are when it looks its best after dark. This guide is for both: visitors on a budget and Riga residents looking for something to do this weekend.

Old Riga and the Art Nouveau streets
Old Riga is compact, and its main sights are best seen from the street: the House of the Blackheads, the Three Brothers houses, the Swedish Gate and the Powder Tower. Then walk north-east through the city centre to Alberta iela. Art Nouveau buildings make up about one third of all buildings in central Riga, which historian Jānis Krastiņš considers the highest concentration in the world (Wikipedia, Art Nouveau architecture in Riga). Many of the most photographed houses on Alberta iela were designed by Mikhail Eisenstein.
Riga Central Market
The market opened in 1930, and its five pavilions reuse the frames of German Zeppelin hangars. Together with Old Riga, it has been on the UNESCO World Heritage list since 1998 (Wikipedia, Riga Central Market). It costs nothing to walk through the meat, fish and dairy pavilions, and in winter it is one of the warmest free walks in the city. Hours vary by pavilion, so check the market's website before you go.
Free museum Sunday and the National Library
On the last Sunday of each month, the permanent exhibitions of the Latvian National Museum of Art, the Art Museum Riga Bourse and the Museum of Decorative Arts and Design are free. If that Sunday is a public holiday and the museum is closed, the free day is not moved (Latvian National Museum of Art). For the rest of 2026 that means 25 October, 29 November and 27 December. Across the river, the National Library of Latvia's permanent exhibition "Book in Latvia" is free of charge (muzeji.lv).
What's on in Riga in November and December 2026?
November is Riga's month of national holidays and light. December is Christmas-market month. These are the free dates worth putting in your calendar.
- 11 November (Wednesday), Lāčplēsis Day. People light candles along the walls of Riga Castle by the Daugava in memory of those who fought for Latvia's freedom. The tradition began in 1988 (LSM). Bring a candle in a holder, or just walk along the embankment after dark.
- 15–18 November, Staro Rīga. The city's light festival runs daily from 17:00 to 23:00 along the Mūkusala promenade, Spīķeri, the Old Town and the city-centre parks, with free entry (Live Riga). It ends on 18 November, Latvia's Proclamation Day.
- From 27 November, the Old Town Christmas market. The city's tender for the Doma laukums market asks the organiser to run it from 27 November 2026 to 1 January 2027 (Jauns.lv, March 2026). Check the final opening hours on riga.lv closer to the date; last season's page lists them day by day.
- Town Hall Square and the first Christmas tree. A marker on the square recalls a 1510 account of the Blackheads' guild setting up a decorated tree there at Christmas, one of the earliest records of a Christmas tree in Europe (Riga In Your Pocket). It is a short walk from Doma laukums.
A self-guided Old Town loop: what to look for
This loop links the free sights above into one walk. It works in any weather and takes as long as you want it to.
- Doma laukums. Start at Riga Cathedral. From late November, this is where the Christmas market and the city's main tree stand.
- The Three Brothers (Mazā Pils iela). Three houses side by side from different centuries. Compare the gables and windows: you are looking at how Riga's houses changed over time.
- Riga Castle and the embankment. Walk to the castle walls and the Daugava. On 11 November this is where the candles are lit, and the view across the river reaches the National Library.
- Town Hall Square. Find the House of the Blackheads and the first Christmas tree marker in the paving.
- Līvu laukums and the Cat House. Look up at the roof for the cats on the turrets.
- The Powder Tower and the Swedish Gate (Torņa iela). The last pieces of the old city fortifications.
- Bastejkalns park and the Freedom Monument. Leave the Old Town through the park along the city canal.
- Optional: Alberta iela. Continue north-east to the Art Nouveau district if you still have daylight.
Locals can turn the same loop into a weekly habit: a different start point each time, and a café stop at the end. If you run a business on this route and want to know how walkers find you, read how to increase foot traffic in winter.
How can you turn a walk around Riga into a game?
Ramble is a free city game inside Telegram. You walk the city, and the game turns your steps into progress you can see.
- Every step earns Gold. Gold builds up as you walk, and collected rewards also give XP, which raises your level on the leaderboard.
- Rewards are real. Local cafés, gyms and shops put discounts, gifts and free visits on the map. Some ask you to answer a couple of their questions first; some have no task at all.
- You collect them in person. The map shows the route and the distance. GPS checks that you are actually there, and you show the coupon's QR code at the place. Each offer can be used once.
- Live Drops are races. At a set time a reward appears on the map, and the first qualified player to reach it wins. No purchase is ever required to take part.
It is free, there is nothing to install, and you must be 18 or older to play. The game launches city by city, starting with Riga, so what you find on the map depends on which local places are running campaigns at the time. If you are new to Mini Apps, our Telegram Mini App guide explains how they work. To start, open Ramble for players.
How do you stay safe and warm on a winter walk in Riga?
- Plan around the light. In December, Riga gets about 6 hours 47 minutes of daylight, with sunrise around 8:56 and sunset around 15:43; the shortest day, 22 December, has 6 hours 43 minutes (SolarWatch). Do the Art Nouveau streets in daylight and save the Old Town and Staro Rīga for after dark.
- Wear a reflector. Latvian road safety campaigns strongly recommend reflective elements for pedestrians in the dark (LSM, 2023). Locals pin one to their coat from October.
- Watch the ice. Cobblestones in Old Riga get slippery. Shoes with grip matter more than a warm hat.
- Keep your phone in your pocket while crossing. Look around you, not at the screen, and follow the traffic rules. No reward is worth the risk.
- Keep your battery warm. Phones drain faster in the cold. Carry the phone in an inside pocket and bring a power bank if you use maps all evening.
- Mobile data. Visitors from the EU and EEA can use mobile data in Latvia without extra roaming charges under the EU "roam like at home" rules, extended until 2032 (European Commission). Check your own plan's terms before you travel.
Is Riga worth visiting in November and December?
Yes, if you come for the evenings. November brings Lāčplēsis Day, Proclamation Day and the Staro Rīga light festival; from late November, Doma laukums turns into the Christmas market. Days are short, so the trick is to plan daylight for architecture and markets, and evenings for light, candles and Christmas. Most of the city's best experiences in these months cost nothing, and a city game can add a reason to walk one more street.
